Our speaker for January is Officer Lemert of the Winton Salem Police Department canine unit. He will be accompanied by his canine companion and partner, Lobo. Also attending is Officer Perkins. He is bringing his dog Bady. Bady is a dog in training. The presentation will include obedience and discovery demonstrations.
The Winton Salem Police Department canine unit consists of 14 K-9 teams. Ten of the canines are trained in patrol work and narcotics. These ten patrol teams provide investigative help to patrol officers and the detective division. Three K-9 teams are single purpose dogs utilized in the Special Investigations Unit for narcotics detection. And one K-9 team is a single purpose dog used in the SRO (School Resource Officer) program for narcotics detection.
The canines are high-quality, well-trained members of the police department. The K-9 handlers are extremely motivated and dedicated police officers.
The canine team, which consists of expertly trained dogs, specialize in conducting evidence searches, narcotics and article searches, tracking of suspects and missing persons, building searches, and apprehension of suspects.
